The Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® and the Town of Duck are pleased to announce the successful completion of the first phase of Duck’s septic health initiative, a voluntary inspection program designed to help property owners better understand, maintain, and protect their septic systems.

A $5,000 grant from the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® enabled the Town of Duck to launch the first phase of the septic health inspection program for property owners in Duck. Through the initiative, eligible property owners received complimentary inspections conducted by qualified, independent professionals, helping them assess the condition and function of their septic systems while supporting broader efforts to protect local water quality.

The success of the first phase has resulted in the Town of Duck budgeting an additional $15,000 in its fiscal year 2026–2027 budget to support additional septic inspections.

“The Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® was excited to collaborate with the Town of Duck on the implementation of this septic health initiative,” said Janice Scarborough, President of the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS®. “Septic health is important for water quality in the Outer Banks, and we congratulate the Town of Duck for its proactive advocacy measures on behalf of property owners.”

“We were pleased with the response from property owners to this program,” said Sandy Cross, Planning and Permits Manager for the Town of Duck. “The inspection program helps property owners understand the vital functions of septic systems and the importance of regular maintenance of their systems.”

The second round of inspections is expected to begin later this year. Property owners interested in participating in the program should contact the Town of Duck at 252-255-1234.
